PBS is launching a new documentary that offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of young people with disabilities as they navigate the complex path to adulthood. Titled Becoming: Disability Stories, the documentary aims to break down stereotypes and spotlight the challenges and triumphs these individuals face while pursuing independence.
The hour-long film, produced by Firelight Media, is set to premiere July 9 on PBS and will also be available for streaming on the PBS app and YouTube. It follows five young adults with disabilities from different backgrounds, each facing unique obstacles related to education, employment, relationships, and societal expectations.
Rather than focusing on medical diagnoses or inspirational clichés, Becoming centers each person’s lived experience. It reveals how factors like race, gender, and access to services impact their journey. The documentary is part of the Homegrown series, a project developed to amplify diverse, underrepresented voices in media.
Producers say the goal is to spark deeper conversations about inclusion, equity, and what real support for disabled youth should look like as they age out of the systems that served them as children.
The film has already begun receiving praise for its honest and empowering storytelling. Viewers can expect to see not just the hurdles, but also the strength, humor, and aspirations of each young adult featured—challenging mainstream narratives around disability and adulthood.
